MedWAR Coming to South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe, CA – Healthcare professionals, wilderness enthusiasts, first responders, outdoor educators, and medical students are encouraged to put their emergency medical knowledge to the test at Tahoe’s MedWAR Challenge on Saturday, September 17.

MedWAR, which stands for Medical Wilderness Adventure Race, is a unique race that combines physical challenges and wilderness medicine in a day long race.  The adventure takes place in Eldorado National Forest and includes mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, and orienteering.  Along the adventure, teams are expected to work together to address and treat patients in mock wilderness medicine scenarios.

Tahoe’s MedWAR is hosted by Barton Health, Tahoe Center for Orthopedics, and Tahoe Emergency Physicians. Dr. Terry Orr, Medical Director of Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation at Barton’s Tahoe Center for Orthopedics, is the event director for Tahoe’s MedWAR.

“MedWAR is hands-on way to learn how to prepare for and improvise when medical issues arise in a wilderness setting,” says Dr. Orr. “Teams come from across the nation to participate in this event and we are fortunate to have the competition here in our backyard.”

Registration is now open. Teams and volunteers can register online at bartonhealth.org/medwar. The challenge costs $350 for a team of four people and includes a pre-event lecture, kayak rental, gift bag, team shirt, and a post-race dinner. Space is limited to 20 teams.
